Classical Literary Tibetan:
Advanced Readings
The next phase of study
introduces more complex sentences, more technical vocabulary and philosophically
prepares students for the challenging topic of Middle Way philosophy.
We are particularly fond of the Grounds and Paths literature, so I usually
encourage students to read one or two books from this genre second year in
preparation for studying Middle Way philosophy.
Third year is generally devoted to Madhyamika through reading selections from
Dzong-ka-ba's chapters on Special Insight from the Middle Length and Great
Expositions of the Stages of the Path. Fourth year usually is focused on Tantric
literature.
If you want to get your Buddhism in Tibetan, it may take you years of hard
work. The benefits in learning to read Tibetan well enough to study a text with
a Lama can be enormous.
